The Magic of Metallics: A Passion for Eye Makeup

Makeup has an extraordinary power to transform. It can sculpt, define, and highlight features, but there’s something especially captivating about eye makeup. Eyes, often said to be the windows to the soul, are where eyeshadow truly shines. The way it can completely alter the energy of a face, creating everything from subtle elegance to striking boldness, is fascinating.

For me, eyeshadow holds a particular allure, especially metallic palettes. The way metallic hues shift and reflect the light, with every blink, every angle, is mesmerising. It’s not just about beauty for me; it’s about celebrating transformation, both in the makeup itself and in how it makes me feel.

What draws me to metallics most are their boldness and depth, with silver, blue, and green being my favourites. There's something about these cool-toned shades that feels both vibrant and serene. Silver, with its luminous, almost otherworldly gleam, reminds me of moonlight on water, soft yet striking. Blue evokes the vastness of the ocean, or the electric pulse of a neon sky, while green brings to mind the rich depth of nature. These shades speak to a part of me that seeks to stand out, but also to express something deeper, something often left unsaid. They are a canvas for my inner self, as vivid as they are introspective.

Throughout my exploration of makeup, I’ve been fortunate to discover the work of two extraordinary women on Instagram: Kayla Ward (@kwardmakeup) and Jen Bolle (@mrs_j_bolle). Their artistry is nothing short of inspiring. Each time I see one of their posts, I am in awe of their precision, creativity, and confidence. It’s not just about how they apply their eyeshadow; it’s about the emotion and story each look tells. They turn their faces into living art, playing with colour, texture, and form in ways that feel both daring and elegant.

What resonates with me about Kayla and Jen is how they make something as personal as eye makeup feel like a statement. Whether they’re experimenting with bold metallic shades or more subtle nuances, their work reminds me that makeup is not just about looking good, it’s about feeling good, embracing the power of self-expression, and embodying a version of yourself that feels authentic and liberated.

There’s a transformative quality to eye makeup that goes beyond the ordinary. A simple sweep of colour can change a face, from neutral to electrifying, from serene to fierce. The versatility of eye makeup is what makes it so captivating. Subtle, smoky eyes evoke mystery and sophistication, while bold metallics scream confidence and creativity. And for me, there’s a particular magic in the wildness of bright metallics, shades that shimmer, shift, and reflect light in fascinating ways.

The ritual of applying eye makeup is a special process. It’s more than just the application; it’s the transformation that follows. Embracing femininity has always been a powerful experience for me, and makeup helps me express that side of myself. Each brushstroke feels like revealing a version of me that is more aligned with my true inner self. It’s a way to feel beautiful, confident, and proud, whether for a special occasion or simply for the joy of it.

Kayla and Jen, through their artistry, have shown me that makeup is far more than just about aesthetics. It’s about empowerment, joy, and embracing creativity without limits. For those of us who love makeup, it becomes something deeply personal, a medium for self-expression and transformation. The silvers, blues, and greens that I gravitate toward are my tribute to this limitless world of possibility.

Whenever I see a post from Kayla or Jen, I’m reminded of the beauty in boldness. It’s okay to stand out, to express yourself with confidence, and to wear your colours with pride. Whether it’s a dramatic eye created with sweeping metallics or a softer, more understated look, there is a kind of magic in what we can do with our eyes, and that magic, for me, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Of course, there are countless other Instagram accounts out there showcasing amazing eye makeup looks, each offering their own unique style and artistry. But Kayla and Jen’s work stands out to me personally, as two of my favourite sources of inspiration. Their creativity, passion, and mastery of eye makeup continue to inspire me every day, and I’m grateful for the way they make me feel connected to this world of endless possibility.

That said, when I see the flawless eye makeup in their photos, I can't help but feel both admiration and a sense of envy. I've always loved makeup, and eye makeup, in particular, has held my fascination for as long as I can remember. But at 52, I sometimes feel like that ship has almost passed me by. I know I should be experimenting more with eyeshadows, yet with my male face and hooded eyes, I often get frustrated that I’m unable to achieve the same results I see in the work of those I follow.

Practice makes perfect, as they say, and so I continue to practice patiently, holding onto the hope that, before it’s too late, I’ll be able to master a look that feels true to me.

My admiration for makeup, especially eye makeup, is leading me to take steps to immerse myself further into the beauty world. I’ve recently applied for an Introduction to Makeup Artistry course, hoping that one day I’ll be able to help my wife and daughter with their makeup. I want to pass on the knowledge I gain, empowering them with more confidence in their own makeup application.

It’s a journey that’s just beginning, and with each step, I’m not only learning how to better express myself but also sharing the magic of makeup with the people I love.
